The BBC has raised serious concerns about the alleged suppression of news from Palestinian outlets on platforms owned by Meta, such as Facebook and Instagram. According to leaked documents examined by the British broadcaster, Meta supposedly issued directives to intensify the moderation of comments originating from Palestinian users starting in October 2023. This move could potentially hinder Palestinian journalists’ ability to effectively reach and engage with their audiences.
This digital barrier has significant implications amidst the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. With reporters largely barred from freely entering Gaza, social media has emerged as a crucial channel for information and voices from within the region. Yet, BBC News Arabic’s investigation into 20 prominent Palestinian Facebook pages revealed a staggering 77% drop in engagement since the escalation of violence in October. For instance, Palestine TV, boasting 5.8 million followers, reported a decline of 60% in audience interaction, leading many Palestinian journalists to suspect a “shadow ban.”
Conversely, statistics illustrate a contrasting surge in engagement for Israeli news outlets on Facebook, which have witnessed a 37% increase during the same timeframe. This disparity raises questions about Meta’s content moderation policies. While the company previously attributed such differences to a lack of Arabic-speaking moderators inadvertently mislabeling Arabic phrases, many remain skeptical of the explanation.
An analysis conducted by the BBC on 30 significant Arabic Facebook pages actually revealed nearly 100% growth in engagement, contradicting Meta’s claims of non-discriminatory practices. Moreover, Meta admitted to ramping up moderation due to a surge in hateful content linked to the conflict.
A representative from Meta addressed these concerns by admitting to occasional errors but firmly denied any deliberate suppression of specific viewpoints. The spokesperson clarified that the intent was never to silence particular voices, emphasizing their commitment to fair moderation practices. Nonetheless, this situation highlights the broader challenge of balancing moderation with freedom of expression on large digital platforms.
