Baldur’s Gate 3 Gets a Game-Changing Third-Person Camera Mod

Baldur’s Gate 3 gets a true third-person camera mod for a more immersive RPG experience

Baldur’s Gate 3 already offers one of the most detailed role-playing adventures on PC, but a new mod is giving players a fresh way to experience the world of Faerûn. The True Third-Person Camera mod introduces a close over-the-shoulder perspective, making exploration feel more like a modern third-person RPG while keeping the core gameplay intact.

Created by modder Relysia, True Third-Person Camera was released for PC players on July 20. The mod builds on Ersh’s Native Camera Tweaks and adds a dedicated camera mode that stays closely connected to the character currently under the player’s control. Instead of viewing the world mostly from an elevated tactical angle, players can now walk through towns, dungeons, forests and battle-scarred paths from a more personal viewpoint.

One of the biggest strengths of the mod is how naturally it adapts to different characters. The camera automatically changes its height depending on the size of the character and whether they are standing or crouching. This helps the perspective feel more polished, whether players are controlling a tall warrior, a smaller companion or a sneaking rogue.

The field of view also widens while running, adding a stronger sense of speed and movement. This makes exploration feel more dynamic without turning Baldur’s Gate 3 into a completely different game. The mod is designed to enhance immersion rather than replace the tactical identity that made the RPG so popular.

To keep gameplay practical, certain actions temporarily shift the camera back to the standard view. When players select spells, target objects, jump or inspect the environment, the game returns to a more traditional camera position. Once the action is finished, the camera automatically switches back to the over-the-shoulder perspective.

The mod also includes convenient control options. Players using an Xbox controller can toggle the third-person view by holding Y, while PlayStation controller users can hold Triangle. Keyboard players can switch the camera using the Numpad asterisk key. The creator also recommends pairing the mod with WASD Character Movement for players who want more direct control over their character while exploring.

True Third-Person Camera comes with several customization settings, allowing players to adjust camera height, distance, field of view, horizontal tracking and character offset. These options make it easier to fine-tune the experience based on personal preference and character type.

As with many unofficial PC mods, there may be occasional issues. The creator notes that camera problems can sometimes happen after cancelling an action or targeting a spell. In most cases, moving the character or switching the camera twice should restore the intended position.

It is important to note that True Third-Person Camera is not an official feature from Larian Studios. It is a community-made modification for the PC version of Baldur’s Gate 3. The mod requires Native Mod Loader, and players who want to use the optional in-game configuration menu will also need the Baldur’s Gate 3 Script Extender.

For players looking to revisit Baldur’s Gate 3 with a more cinematic and immersive perspective, this third-person camera mod could be one of the most interesting ways to experience Faerûn from a new angle.
