Publisher eastasiasoft and developer Monster Theater are bringing Atomic Owl to consoles, giving more players a chance to dive into its tough-as-nails throwback action platforming. The pixel-art adventure launches May 20 on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. A Microsoft Store release is also planned for PC, and it will support Xbox Play Anywhere. To celebrate the launch, a 10% discount will be available for a limited time.
What makes this console release especially appealing is that it’s being positioned as the definitive version of Atomic Owl. Alongside upgrades across the experience, it introduces a standout option many retro fans have been asking for: a “NO ROGUELITE” mode. That means you can play Atomic Owl as a classic side-scrolling platformer without roguelite mechanics—ideal if you want a more traditional, stage-based challenge while still keeping the game’s fast combat and tight controls.
Atomic Owl follows Hidalgo Bladewing, an avian hero who returns to a favorite ramen spot with his companions after a dangerous mission—only for everything to fall apart when the vengeful void crow Omega Wing appears. Two years later, Hidalgo sets out to rescue his fallen friends from Omega Wing’s grasp, teaming up with a chaotic, brash-talking sword that brings plenty of personality to the journey.
At its core, Atomic Owl is a single-player, 2D side-scrolling action game with roguelite structure, blending rapid platforming with hack-and-slash combat. Players fight through eight distinct zones, battling waves of enemies while experimenting with different weapons, powerups, and builds. The definitive version also promises rebalanced weapons and improved sound, helping the combat and pacing feel better across both roguelite and non-roguelite playstyles.
Players can expect eight side-scrolling stages filled with dangerous Tengu enemies, a wide range of weapon choices (including swords, hammers, whips, and more), and varied gameplay moments such as winged sections where you can glide through the world of Judanest. There’s also dynamic dialogue delivered by a voice-acted cast, and the ability to transform into the powerful Void Crow to tear through foes when you need that extra edge.
With its console debut, expanded options, and a mode designed specifically for classic platformer fans, Atomic Owl is shaping up to be a strong pick for players who love challenging retro-inspired action games—whether you prefer the replay-heavy roguelite loop or a straightforward side-scrolling campaign.
