Apple Introduces New Safari Feature to Enhance Focus by Eliminating Distractions
Apple’s Safari browser is gaining a new feature aimed at enhancing user experience by enabling the removal of distracting elements on websites. The Distraction Control tool is a function designed for individuals who want a cleaner, more focused browsing experience. This development follows the trend of creating more customizable web interfaces, echoing the previous year’s introduction of Boosts by Arc Browser, which similarly allowed users to tailor websites to their preferences.
The Distraction Control feature is currently being introduced in the latest developer betas of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. As part of Apple’s continuous effort to refine and upgrade its operating systems, this tool adds another layer of user accessibility and customization.
Engaging with the Distraction Control Tool
To activate the Distraction Control, users can navigate to the Page Menu located in the Smart Search field. From here, individuals can select the particular elements on a website they wish to hide. Whether it’s sidebars, pop-ups, or other non-essential items, Safari will remember the user’s preferences and ensure those elements remain hidden on subsequent visits. However, currently, these preferences are not synchronized across devices, which means users will need to set their preferences on each device individually.
In case a user changes their mind and wants to revisit what they’ve hidden, there’s a simple solution. By selecting the Hide icon—now highlighted in blue—in the search field, users can click “Show hidden items” and the concealed webpage elements will become visible again.
It is important to note that the Distraction Control feature is designed with limitations to protect essential website functions. The tool does not remove advertisements or other sections of a site that display frequently changing content. Therefore, it’s uncertain whether this new feature could hide dynamic/widgets like “Who to follow” or “Explore” boxes on various platforms, as the content within these sections often changes even though their location on the page does not.
The Latest iOS 18 Updates
In addition to Distraction Control, iOS 18 brings a redesigned audio reader with improved listening capabilities and font control settings for an optimized reading experience. Another innovative feature called Highlights is introduced, allowing users to quickly access crucial information on a webpage. This could range from driving directions, contact details, or even concise summaries of media reviews.
As Safari continues to evolve, these updates suggest Apple’s focus on providing a more tailored and distraction-free environment for its users. Users are encouraged to explore the new features and customize their web browsing to fit their unique needs and preferences, ensuring an efficient and enjoyable digital experience.
