However, renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has shed light on Apple’s future plans, revealing that the iPhone 17 will feature separate specialized chips for WiFi 7 and 5G, both designed by Apple.
The tech behemoth is indeed crafting a unique 5G chip for upcoming iPhones, but it won’t integrate WiFi and Bluetooth functionalities as speculated earlier. Instead, these will remain as distinct components. The iPhone SE 4 is set to debut with Apple’s proprietary 5G modem, yet the WiFi 7 component will be sourced from Broadcom.
Kuo’s insights suggest that Apple is poised to initiate a transformative phase, gradually phasing out its reliance on vendors like Qualcomm and Broadcom. Starting in the latter half of 2025, Apple’s distinct 5G and WiFi chips will cautiously be introduced into new products, though the transition timelines will not coincide due to divergent production paths. Specifically, while the iPhone SE4 will incorporate an Apple 5G modem, it will still utilize a Broadcom WiFi chip initially.
For the anticipated iPhone 17 lineup, Apple will continue utilizing Broadcom’s WiFi technology, while introducing its tailor-made 5G chip. This internal chip, however, may not initially match Qualcomm’s performance. However, the iPhone 17 Air is rumored to be among the first to feature Apple’s new 5G modem, with the rest of the lineup maintaining temporary reliance on Qualcomm.

In addition to the iPhone 17 Air, the iPhone SE 4 will also see a switch to Apple’s custom modem, albeit with separate chips for WiFi and 5G.
