Apple M5 Ultra Mac Studio Shipping Delays Stretch to 16–18 Weeks as Demand and Memory Costs Bite
Apple’s new M5 Ultra Mac Studio is already facing a serious supply crunch, with delivery estimates now stretching to 16 to 18 weeks. For buyers hoping to get their hands on Apple’s most powerful desktop workstation soon, that means orders could arrive well into January 2027.
When Apple introduced the M5 Ultra chip in August, expectations were high that the company would keep Mac Studio availability under control. Apple is known for its supply chain strength, and many assumed it would be prepared for strong demand from creative professionals, developers, AI users, and power users upgrading from older Apple Silicon machines.
Instead, early availability suggests that the M5 Ultra Mac Studio is being hit by the same broader component pressures that have affected other Mac configurations throughout the year.
Apple has already made several quiet configuration changes in recent months. In April, the company removed the base M4 Mac mini model from its configurator. That version included 16GB of unified memory, 256GB of storage, and a $599 starting price.
Then, in early May, Apple also removed the 256GB storage option from the M3 Ultra Mac Studio configurator. After that change, the 96GB unified memory configuration became the only available choice for that model.
Apple has pointed to memory supply and pricing as a key reason behind these changes. During its latest earnings call, the company said memory costs had already increased and were expected to climb further. Apple noted that it paid more for memory in the March quarter than in the December quarter, paid significantly more again in the June quarter, and expected memory prices to rise even higher in September.
That pressure now appears to be affecting the M5 Ultra Mac Studio as well.
The long shipping window is likely the result of two forces working at the same time: limited production capacity and unusually strong demand. The Mac Studio has become one of Apple’s most important machines for professionals who need extreme performance without stepping up to a Mac Pro. With the arrival of the M5 Ultra chip, that demand appears to have intensified.
The M5 Ultra is built to be a powerhouse. It features a 36-core CPU made up of 12 super cores and 24 performance cores, an 80-core GPU, and a 32-core Neural Engine. Apple has also equipped the chip with a high-bandwidth interconnect designed to handle demanding workloads across CPU, GPU, and AI tasks.
The GPU has received major upgrades as well. Each core includes a Neural Accelerator, while the architecture also supports second-generation Dynamic Caching, new hardware-accelerated mesh shading, and third-generation ray tracing. These improvements make the M5 Ultra especially attractive for 3D rendering, video production, machine learning, software development, game development, and other high-performance workflows.
Performance results are already creating buzz. In early Geekbench 7 scores, the M5 Ultra has shown enough strength to outperform the 96-core AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX CPU, reinforcing Apple’s position in the high-end workstation market.
That level of performance helps explain why buyers are willing to wait months for the new Mac Studio. For many professionals, the M5 Ultra Mac Studio is not just another desktop computer. It is a compact workstation designed to replace bulky, power-hungry systems while delivering elite performance for creative and technical workloads.
Still, the extended lead times may frustrate customers who need new hardware quickly. A 16 to 18-week wait is significant, especially for studios, production teams, developers, and businesses planning hardware upgrades before the end of the year.
For now, anyone considering the M5 Ultra Mac Studio should be prepared for a long wait. Unless Apple can improve supply or memory conditions ease, delivery dates may remain pushed out for weeks or even months.
