Apple’s A20 Pro chip could be shaping up to be one of the biggest iPhone performance upgrades in years, if the latest Geekbench 6 results are accurate. A combination of a new manufacturing process and redesigned chip packaging appears to have given Apple enough headroom to push its next-generation mobile silicon far beyond the A19 Pro.
The leaked benchmark scores suggest that the A20 Pro is nearing the 5,000-point mark in single-core performance, an impressive milestone for a smartphone processor. Even more surprising is that these results reportedly come from Geekbench 6 rather than the newer Geekbench 7 test suite, making the figures stand out even more.
Compared with the A19 Pro, the A20 Pro appears to deliver a major leap while keeping the same core count. The leaked data points to around a 24.5 percent improvement in single-core performance and a 26.9 percent increase in multi-core performance. That kind of jump is significant, especially in a yearly smartphone upgrade cycle where performance gains are often more modest.
One of the biggest reasons behind this improvement may be Apple’s expected move to TSMC’s 2nm manufacturing process. A smaller and more advanced node typically improves power efficiency, thermal behavior, and transistor density, giving chip designers more room to increase performance without drastically raising energy consumption.
Another key factor could be Apple’s redesigned chip packaging. Instead of placing the DRAM directly on top of the A20 Pro, the new layout reportedly moves memory to the side. This change may help the processor manage heat more effectively, allowing its high-performance cores to reach much higher clock speeds. Some reports suggest the A20 Pro’s fastest cores could boost close to 5.00GHz, which would be remarkable for an iPhone chip.
The leaked Geekbench 6 numbers also show the A20 Pro competing with Apple’s M-series processors. The chip reportedly edges past the M3 in certain CPU workloads and even outperforms the M5 Max by around 10 percent in single-threaded performance. While laptop and desktop chips still have advantages in sustained workloads, cooling, and power limits, the single-core result highlights just how far Apple’s mobile silicon has progressed.
It is important to note that Geekbench 6 is not designed to measure long-term sustained performance. Real-world results will depend on thermal limits, device design, software optimization, and battery efficiency. Still, the early scores suggest that Apple’s next iPhone processor could deliver a noticeable performance upgrade across everyday tasks, gaming, photo editing, video processing, and AI-related workloads.
The A20 Pro is also expected to be Apple’s first iPhone chipset with a 7-core GPU. If the CPU results are any indication, graphics performance could see a major boost as well. That would make the chip especially interesting for mobile gaming, high-resolution video editing, and advanced visual effects in apps.
If these leaked Geekbench 6 results reflect final hardware, the Apple A20 Pro could mark a major turning point for iPhone performance. With TSMC’s 2nm process, improved packaging, higher clock speeds, and a more powerful GPU, Apple may be preparing one of its most ambitious mobile chips yet.
