Apple appears to be planning a major design shake-up for the iPhone’s 20th anniversary in 2027, and the latest chatter suggests the ambitious concept is still alive. The idea: a truly all-screen iPhone with virtually no bezels, potentially no physical buttons, and a front-facing camera that disappears beneath the display for a clean, uninterrupted look.
According to noted leaker Digital Chat Station, Apple is pushing to shrink the Dynamic Island across upcoming iPhone generations while also exploring under-display camera technology paired with Face ID. That combination is key to Apple’s long-term goal of removing visible cutouts and maximizing usable screen space without giving up the security and convenience that Face ID is known for.
What makes this leak especially interesting is the mention of a commemorative iPhone prototype said to include an under-display camera and a striking “four curved edges” design. If accurate, it points to a phone that looks more like a single piece of glass from the front—smooth, minimal, and radically different from the current design language.
Of course, hiding a selfie camera under the screen isn’t simple. Other smartphone makers have tried under-display selfie cameras, and results have often been underwhelming—typically producing softer images and struggling with light capture. Apple’s reported approach suggests it’s aiming for fewer compromises, even if that means taking longer to perfect the technology. The biggest hurdle may be under-display Face ID, which is far more complex than hiding a standard camera due to the sensors involved.
In the nearer term, Apple’s changes are expected to be more subtle. The iPhone 18 lineup is rumored to bring a smaller Dynamic Island rather than removing it entirely, indicating that Apple is still working through the technical challenges. That would mean the next generation may deliver modest visual refinements, while the truly dramatic redesign is being reserved for the milestone model expected in 2027.
If Apple pulls this off, the 20th anniversary iPhone could represent one of the biggest leaps in iPhone design in years—an ultra-modern, bezel-free device that finally delivers the seamless “all-screen” experience Apple has been inching toward.
