Apple’s Senior Vice President, Greg “Joz” Joswiak, has taken to the social media platform to officially announce that the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 will take place from June 10 to June 14. Hinting at big developments in artificial intelligence, Joswiak teased the event, saying it will be “Absolutely Incredible.”
WWDC, as its name implies, is centered around developers working with Apple’s array of operating systems. Traditionally hosted at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple’s Cupertino campus, it comprises multiple days of expert-led panels and interactive workshops, catering to the Apple software ecosystem. Expectations are high for updates across the board, including iOS and iPadOS 18, macOS 15, and watchOS 11.
Given that the Vision Pro headset and its visionOS were unveiled a year ago, the upcoming conference is likely to see an influx of content and sessions dedicated to this new hardware and software. Moreover, updates around Apple Silicon and potential new Mac releases are highly anticipated.
The spotlight, however, is expected to shine most brightly on Apple’s advances in artificial intelligence. With top rivals like Microsoft and Google making significant strides in generative AI, Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, has hinted at groundbreaking AI innovations to be revealed this year, and WWDC could be the perfect stage for such announcements, including any developments on the rumored partnership with Google on a project called Gemini for the iPhone.
Speculations are also rife regarding iOS 18, which is rumored to be one of the most significant updates in the platform’s history, introducing AI tools aimed at enhancing day-to-day life management, beyond just generative AI capabilities.
Comparatively, earlier this year, Samsung introduced its Galaxy S24 series, which leveraged Google’s AI innovations, demonstrating the industry-wide shift towards integrating AI into smartphones. Apple also staked its claim with the new M3-powered MacBook Airs, proclaiming them to be the “World’s Best Consumer Laptop for AI,” largely thanks to the neural processing units infused within their in-house chips.
Apple has also indicated that developers and students will have the chance to join an exclusive event at Apple Park on the first day of WWDC, likely referring to the information-packed keynote that opens the event. Although the in-person attendance remains limited compared to pre-pandemic levels, Apple’s announcement indicates a continuation of some live elements reminiscent of the events hosted at the San Jose Convention Center.
Out of all the event attendees, a select group of 50 “winners” will be invited to experience the conference in person in Cupertino, a distinction that remains highly coveted among the Apple developer community.
WWDC 2024 is positioned amongst other major tech events, following Google I/O (May 14-15) and Microsoft Build (May 21-24), setting the stage for a competitive summer of technological reveals and advancements.
This announcement comes on the heels of recent legal actions, as the Department of Justice announced a lawsuit against the tech giant over accusations of monopolistic practices, particularly regarding the innovation and sale of the iPhone. Despite this, the anticipation for WWDC 2024 suggests a focus on creativity and technological progress at the forefront of Apple’s agenda.
