Apple Set to Supercharge iPhone and MacBook Photos with New AI-Powered Features

Apple is preparing a major wave of new AI-powered features for the iPhone, and the biggest changes are expected to land inside the Photos app. According to a recent report, the next major updates—iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27—will introduce a fresh set of “Apple Intelligence Tools” designed to make photo editing faster, smarter, and far more flexible across iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Right now, Apple’s Photos app has a limited selection of AI-style editing options. It includes a “Clean Up” tool for removing distracting objects, but its results have been considered fairly modest compared to what many competing smartphones can achieve. With iOS 27, Apple appears ready to close that gap by expanding AI editing into a wider toolkit that goes beyond simple object removal.

The upcoming “Apple Intelligence Tools” section is expected to include three new photo features alongside Clean Up:

Enhance will automatically improve a photo’s colors, exposure, and overall image quality. Apple already offers an Enhance option today, but this new version is expected to use AI to make smarter adjustments—aiming for more natural improvements without requiring manual edits.

Reframe will let you change the perspective of a photo after you’ve taken it. If shifting the angle or composition reveals areas that weren’t captured by the camera, AI will generate the missing image details so the edit still looks complete.

Extend will expand the edges of a photo to add more background or context. This is especially useful for tight close-ups where you later wish you had captured more of the scene. The added areas would be generated by AI to blend with the original image.

These features point to a clear goal: making the built-in Apple Photos app a more powerful, all-in-one editor, reducing the need for third-party apps for everyday fixes and creative adjustments.

Beyond photo editing, the same updates are also expected to bring an AI-supported version of Siri along with general performance improvements. As for timing, iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 are currently expected to arrive in the typical fall release window, likely September or October.

If this report proves accurate, iOS 27 could be a turning point for iPhone users who have been waiting for Apple to take a bigger leap with AI—especially in the area people use every day: taking, editing, and sharing photos.
