The introduction of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus marked a turning point for Apple, as these were the first models to forgo the traditional headphone jack. While this change initially raised eyebrows, Apple provided users with a solution: the Lightning to 3.5mm adapter. Although somewhat flimsy, it allowed users to continue using their existing audio gear. However, with the recent launch of the iPhone 16 series, equipped with a USB-C port, Apple seems to be moving away from the Lightning adapter altogether.
Currently, the Lightning to 3.5mm adapter is out of stock on Apple’s U.S. online store, with the option to purchase or add to the cart no longer available. This disappearance suggests that Apple may be phasing out the adapter in favor of newer accessories, such as a Lightning to USB-C adapter. This change is already evident in some countries like France, Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden, where the adapter remains available but might soon become scarce.
Apple initially included the Lightning to 3.5mm adapter with the iPhone 7 series through a few subsequent models, such as the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max. With the discontinuation of the adapter as a complimentary accessory in later models, customers were left to purchase it separately for $9—a minor investment compared to Apple’s AirPods.
For those concerned about the future availability of the Lightning to 3.5mm adapter, third-party manufacturers are likely to continue offering similar solutions. The Apple adapter often faced criticism due to its fragile design, lacking reinforced joints or protective braiding, making it prone to wear and tear. Fortunately, alternative options on platforms like Amazon provide more durability, with prices starting around $14.99, sometimes accompanied by additional discounts.
Despite Apple’s shift in focus, the demand for such adapters from third-party suppliers will likely persist, ensuring users can maintain compatibility with older audio equipment.
