When Apple introduced Image Playground last year, it was hailed as an easy way to create personalized, unique images using Apple Intelligence. However, the initial rollout left some users underwhelmed due to its limitations and occasionally low-quality outputs.
Reports from users highlighted amusing glitches, like a six-fingered hand appearing when trying to render a simple hand image. Others struggled to get images for basic prompts like “old man” or “flower.”
Critics questioned the app’s purpose, especially when compared to more advanced AI image generators. Despite this, some users have found it to be a fun tool.
During this year’s WWDC, Apple announced a significant upgrade to Image Playground by integrating ChatGPT. This enhancement promises a more sophisticated AI image generation experience.
With ChatGPT now part of Image Playground, users will explore new artistic styles beyond the basic emoji-like images. These include Oil Painting, Watercolor, Vector, Anime, and Print. There’s also a new “Any Style” option for users to describe their vision more freely. These styles will be marked with a “ChatGPT style” banner.
Previously, users were restricted to Animation, Illustration, Sketch, and Genmoji styles.
Apple assures users that Image Playground will only send descriptions to ChatGPT with their permission, focusing on privacy and user control.
By incorporating ChatGPT, Apple aims to revitalize Image Playground and strengthen its competitive edge against other free image creation apps. This move aligns with Apple’s broader strategy of integrating OpenAI’s tools, such as enhancing Siri’s capabilities and introducing system-wide features like Writing Tools for text generation and editing.
The enhanced Image Playground is set to debut with the release of iOS 26 this fall. This upgrade demonstrates Apple’s commitment to refining its AI offerings and enhancing user experience.
