There are many TV stick streaming devices on the market today, providing consumers with an affordable way to stream media seamlessly. For instance, the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K can often be purchased for as little as $29.99, whereas the Apple TV 4K currently costs $129. Both devices serve the same fundamental purpose of streaming content, but there was a time when Apple considered entering this market segment.
However, rumors suggest that Apple’s TV stick would have been deemed ‘cheap,’ and the company’s marketing team wanted to project a focus on ‘premium’ hardware. In hindsight, this decision appears to have been a misstep, as the consumer trend has shifted towards content subscriptions rather than specific hardware ownership. It’s also evident that Apple doesn’t heavily market the Apple TV, especially considering the last version was launched in 2022, indicating that the product is not a primary focus for the company.
Reports also highlight that Apple lost $20 billion in producing original content, suggesting that streaming and entertainment may not be its strong suit.
A few years back, Apple seemed to have the right idea about introducing a TV stick. Mark Gurman recently mentioned that Apple’s marketing team believed such a device might be perceived as low-quality and not aligned with their premium hardware philosophy. Despite current-generation TV sticks like those from Amazon or Roku being mostly plastic with basic remotes, their primary objective of enabling users to stream content remains successful.
The modern Apple TV 4K includes an A15 Bionic chip. Gurman’s discussion also touched upon potential cooling issues for a theoretical Apple TV stick. Nonetheless, Apple’s advanced technology, such as the M3 running in MacBooks and the M4 in iPad Pros, works efficiently with minimal heat management.
Apple could produce a TV stick with an aluminum chassis to assist with heat spread. Even if the device were slightly larger to improve cooling, it is feasible Apple could manage it effectively. Considering the A15 Bionic doesn’t require extensive cooling – as proven by its use in previous iPhones – Apple’s engineers would likely navigate these challenges.
Gurman posits that Apple may be reconsidering its strategy regarding a TV stick, which would be a smart move given the shift towards streaming services. With Apple TV+ available on various platforms, introducing a TV stick could indeed be a logical next step for the company.
