Apple’s future Mac Studio may be heading for one of the biggest performance upgrades in the Apple Silicon era. A new report claims that the upcoming Apple M7 Ultra chip could support up to 1.5 TB of unified memory, a huge jump that would push Apple’s desktop hardware much closer to high-end workstation and entry-level server territory.

The current Apple Silicon memory ceiling is far lower by comparison. Apple’s M3 Ultra supports up to 512 GB of unified memory, making the rumored M7 Ultra limit three times higher. If accurate, this would mark the largest unified memory increase Apple has delivered since moving the Mac lineup away from Intel processors.

Apple’s chip roadmap also appears to be shifting. The standard Apple M6 is expected to arrive later this year, possibly alongside a new MacBook model. However, the M6 Pro, M6 Max, and M6 Ultra are reportedly not planned. Instead, Apple’s next major performance-focused chips may arrive under the M7 lineup, with the M7 Ultra positioned as the flagship processor for demanding creative, professional, and AI-heavy workflows.

A 1.5 TB unified memory limit would be especially important for users working with large language models, 3D rendering, scientific simulations, huge video projects, advanced software development, and other memory-intensive tasks. Unlike traditional PCs that separate CPU and GPU memory, Apple’s unified memory architecture allows the processor, graphics cores, and other chip components to access the same shared memory pool. That can improve efficiency and reduce bottlenecks in certain professional workloads.

There is still one major question: will Apple actually sell a Mac Studio with the full 1.5 TB configuration? Support at the chip level does not always mean every option will reach customers. Apple has previously limited available configurations even when the hardware was technically capable of more. So while the M7 Ultra may support 1.5 TB, Apple could choose to offer lower memory options depending on cost, thermal design, market demand, or product positioning.

The next Mac Studio with the M7 Ultra is rumored to launch in early 2028. It is also expected to feature an improved cooling system, which would make sense if Apple plans to significantly increase memory capacity, CPU performance, and GPU power. A stronger thermal design could help the chip sustain high performance during long workloads such as rendering, compiling, machine learning, and video processing.

Another interesting detail is Apple’s reported manufacturing strategy. The base M7 chip has been rumored to use Intel’s 18A-P process, but the high-end M7 Ultra is expected to remain with TSMC. Given the expected 2028 launch window, the chip could be built on a version of TSMC’s N2 process family, though the exact node has not been confirmed.

If Apple combines this memory expansion with a major increase in CPU and GPU cores, the M7 Ultra could become a serious competitor in the premium workstation market. It may be positioned against future high-performance chips from AMD and Intel, while also appealing to professionals who would otherwise consider entry-level server-class hardware.

For Mac Studio users, the rumored M7 Ultra upgrade could be a major turning point. Apple’s compact desktop has already become popular among video editors, developers, designers, and creative professionals who need powerful hardware without the size and complexity of a traditional workstation tower. A future model with up to 1.5 TB of unified memory would make the Mac Studio far more attractive for advanced AI workloads and large-scale professional projects.

Nothing is official yet, and Apple’s plans could change before launch. Still, the possibility of an M7 Ultra with 1.5 TB of unified memory suggests that Apple is preparing a major leap for its most powerful Mac desktops.
