Apple’s product pipeline rarely slows down, and the latest chatter suggests the company is already planning what comes next for its budget-friendly iPhone lineup. Even though the iPhone 17e is only just rolling out to customers and hasn’t fully reached retail shelves in many places, a new claim says Apple has already moved forward with early development work for the iPhone 18e, a model not expected until spring 2027.
The tip comes from Fixed Focus Digital, who stated in a recent Weibo post that the iPhone 18e has already been “finalized,” implying Apple has begun preparatory work far earlier than most people would expect for a lower-cost iPhone refresh.
To understand why this is notable, it helps to look at what Apple just launched. The iPhone 17e arrived without the rumored Dynamic Island, sticking instead with the classic notch design that houses Face ID and the front camera. It features a Super Retina XDR OLED display capable of reaching up to 1,200 nits peak brightness. The phone also uses an aluminum frame and a Ceramic Shield 2 front cover, which is said to offer up to three times better scratch resistance along with improved anti-glare performance.
Performance is driven by Apple’s A19 chip with a 6-core CPU, a 4-core GPU that includes neural accelerators in each core, and an updated 16-core Neural Engine designed with large language model workloads in mind. Connectivity is also a highlight: the iPhone 17e includes the C1X modem, described as up to twice as fast as the C1 used in the iPhone 16e, while using around 30% less energy than the modem in the iPhone 16 Pro. This modem also supports Apple’s satellite-based features such as Emergency SOS, Roadside Assistance, satellite Messages, and Find My via satellite.
On the camera side, Apple positions the iPhone 17e as simple but capable. It includes a single 48MP Fusion rear camera that enables an “optical-quality” 2x Telephoto experience. Users can capture high-resolution 48MP shots or stick with the default 24MP mode.
Pricing is aimed squarely at the budget-premium segment. In the US, Apple lists the iPhone 17e 256GB model at $599, with a 24-month installment option of $24.95 per month. Pre-orders began March 4, and in-store availability is scheduled for March 11.
So what might the iPhone 18e bring if Apple is truly already laying the groundwork? While nothing is confirmed, it’s reasonable to expect a few logical upgrades. The biggest would likely be a shift away from the notch to the Dynamic Island, bringing the budget iPhone’s design closer to Apple’s more premium models. It would also make sense for the iPhone 18e to adopt Apple’s next-generation A20 chip.
A modem upgrade is less certain. The report suggests it’s unlikely Apple would jump to a next-gen C2 modem for this particular model, especially if the current C1X platform already delivers strong efficiency and satellite capabilities. For now, the iPhone 18e remains a longer-term play, and details should become clearer over time as more information emerges about Apple’s roadmap for its affordable iPhone series.
