Apple May Skip M6 Pro and M6 Max as M7 Chips Take Priority for Major AI Upgrade

Apple’s chip roadmap may be moving faster than expected as the company reportedly shifts its focus toward a more powerful M7 generation designed around on-device artificial intelligence. Instead of completing the M6 family with Pro, Max, and Ultra variants, Apple is said to be preparing to jump straight to the M7 lineup.

The move would mark a notable break from Apple’s usual silicon release pattern. In recent years, the company has typically launched a base M-series chip first, followed by higher-end Pro, Max, and Ultra versions for more powerful Macs. This time, however, the M6 Pro and M6 Max may never arrive, with Apple reportedly choosing to replace them with the M7 Pro and M7 Max instead.

According to industry reporting from Mark Gurman, Apple finalized the design stage of the M7 only about six months after doing the same for the M6. That accelerated schedule suggests Apple is eager to bring its next-generation AI improvements to market sooner rather than waiting to complete the full M6 lineup.

The standard M7 chip is expected to arrive in the first half of 2027. It could debut inside a redesigned MacBook Pro, which is also rumored to feature improved cooling through a vapor chamber system. The more powerful M7 Pro and M7 Max chips are expected to follow toward the end of 2027, while the M7 Ultra could arrive in 2028 for Apple’s highest-performance desktop machines.

One of the biggest expected upgrades is unified memory performance. The M7 is rumored to support up to 240GB/s of unified memory bandwidth, a major increase over the M5’s reported 153GB/s limit. That would represent a gain of around 56 percent, giving future Macs more room to handle demanding workloads such as generative AI, advanced media editing, software development, and professional 3D tasks.

Apple’s focus appears to be on improving AI processing directly on the device rather than relying heavily on cloud servers. Faster memory bandwidth, stronger neural processing, and larger unified memory options could make future Macs significantly better at running local AI models, creative tools, and productivity features without sending as much data off-device.

The M7 Ultra is expected to be the most ambitious chip in the lineup. Reports suggest it could deliver a dramatic jump in AI performance and move closer to the territory currently dominated by dedicated AI accelerators. For Apple, that would be a major step toward making its Mac lineup more competitive in the rapidly expanding AI hardware race.

The upcoming M7 Ultra may also support extremely large unified memory configurations, with some reports pointing to as much as 1.5TB in future workstation-class Macs. If accurate, that would make it especially attractive for professionals working with large AI models, scientific computing, video production, animation, and other memory-intensive workloads.

Apple’s faster chip development cycle appears to be tied directly to the global AI boom. Demand for advanced semiconductor manufacturing has surged as companies race to build faster AI processors. Apple is also believed to be planning ahead for future manufacturing nodes, with the M8 already reportedly in development. The company may use TSMC’s 2nm process for only a limited number of generations before moving to an even more advanced 1.4nm process, depending on supply and production timelines.

For Mac users, the biggest takeaway is that Apple may be preparing a much more aggressive upgrade cycle. Instead of waiting longer for incremental improvements, customers could see faster leaps in performance, especially in AI-related tasks. The tradeoff, however, could be higher pricing, particularly as memory costs continue to rise across the industry.

If these reports prove accurate, the M7 family could become one of Apple’s most important chip launches yet. By skipping the high-end M6 variants and moving directly to M7 Pro, M7 Max, and M7 Ultra, Apple appears to be betting heavily on the future of on-device AI and next-generation Mac performance.
