Apple reportedly cancels Vision Pro Air display project as Samsung shifts micro-OLED work toward smart glasses

Apple appears to be changing direction in its mixed-reality hardware plans, with new reports suggesting the company has ended development work on micro-OLED panels intended for a lighter version of the Vision Pro, often referred to as the Vision Pro Air. The move comes as Apple is believed to be putting more attention into AI-powered smart glasses, a category that could offer a smaller, more wearable alternative to its current headset strategy.

The reported cancellation affects a joint display development effort with Samsung. The project was focused on creating more affordable micro-OLED panels for a slimmer, lighter Vision Pro model. These panels were internally known as the G-VR display and were expected to use a glass substrate as part of an effort to reduce costs compared with the high-end display technology used in the existing Vision Pro.

Micro-OLED, also known as OLEDoS, is considered one of the most important display technologies for next-generation AR glasses and mixed-reality headsets. Unlike standard OLED panels found in smartphones, tablets, and TVs, micro-OLED places organic light-emitting diodes directly onto a silicon wafer. This allows the display to achieve extremely high pixel density in a very small form factor.

That matters because AR smart glasses and compact headsets need displays that are bright, sharp, efficient, and small enough to fit into lightweight hardware. By using CMOS-based silicon backplanes, micro-OLED panels can also deliver better power efficiency, which is crucial for wearable devices that need long battery life without becoming bulky or uncomfortable.

Earlier reports had suggested that Apple was backing away from the Vision Pro Air concept and had asked Samsung to stop work on the low-cost micro-OLED panels created for the device. Now, the project is said to have been formally cancelled, with Samsung reportedly asked to wind down its G-VR development work as early as September. The timeline may be tied to existing agreements between the two companies.

Mass production of these panels was not expected until 2028, meaning the Vision Pro Air was likely still several years away from launch. Apple’s decision to pull back could signal that the company sees more potential in lightweight smart glasses than in another headset-style device, especially as artificial intelligence becomes a bigger part of future wearable products.

For Samsung, however, the display research may not go to waste. The company is reportedly expected to continue developing low-cost micro-OLED technology, potentially for its own smart glasses. If that happens, Samsung could use the work originally aimed at Apple’s lighter Vision Pro model to strengthen its position in the growing AR and AI wearable market.

The shift highlights a broader trend in the tech industry. While premium mixed-reality headsets showcase impressive technology, they remain expensive, heavy, and difficult to turn into mainstream consumer products. Smart glasses, on the other hand, promise a more natural form factor that could blend cameras, displays, AI assistants, navigation, translation, notifications, and augmented reality features into everyday eyewear.

Apple’s Vision Pro proved that the company can build a highly advanced spatial computing device, but its size and price have limited its appeal. A lighter Vision Pro Air could have helped address some of those concerns, yet the company may now believe that truly compact AI smart glasses are the better long-term path.

Samsung’s continued interest in micro-OLED also suggests that display technology will remain a key battleground for the next generation of wearable devices. Whoever can deliver bright, efficient, high-resolution displays at a lower cost may have a major advantage as AR glasses move closer to the consumer market.

For now, Apple’s reported cancellation of the Vision Pro Air display project does not necessarily mean the company is abandoning spatial computing. Instead, it may indicate a strategic reset, with Apple moving away from bulky headset designs and toward smaller, AI-driven wearable devices. Meanwhile, Samsung may turn the same micro-OLED research into a foundation for its own future smart glasses.
