Apple is reportedly contemplating a substantial investment in OpenAI, worth billions of dollars. Nvidia is also said to be considering participation in the next funding round, which could elevate OpenAI’s valuation to over $100 billion. The information was highlighted by the Wall Street Journal and later confirmed by Bloomberg.
OpenAI has emerged as a leading force in making AI tools accessible to the general public. The launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 brought significant attention to the company, becoming widely recognized and igniting a fresh wave of interest in artificial intelligence.
At the previous Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple announced a series of new AI features under the umbrella term “Apple Intelligence,” which included a revamped Siri. Additionally, they introduced a ChatGPT integration, featuring the advanced GPT-4o model to manage requests beyond Siri’s conventional capabilities. There were also discussions about Apple Fellow Phil Schiller joining OpenAI’s board, though this did not come to fruition.
Nvidia is OpenAI’s main supplier for the hardware essential to its AI products, making its interest in the funding round logical. Microsoft has already invested over $13 billion in OpenAI since 2019 and remains a significant supporter. The potential investment by Apple and Nvidia, alongside Microsoft’s continued backing, signals the immense future potential these tech giants see in OpenAI.
Apple’s AI features, Apple Intelligence, are available on all Macs with M1 chips and higher, including the 13-inch MacBook Air.
