Apple’s Intelligence feature, a standout aspect of the newly launched iPhone 16 models, may not be available in the European Union (EU) after all. The tech giant is facing increasing pressure from EU regulations, making compliance a significant challenge. A recently introduced AI Pact in the EU requires companies to prepare for upcoming AI rules, yet Apple has refrained from signing this agreement thus far, according to Per Politico.
Both Apple and Meta are hesitant to commit to the new AI Pact in the EU, a move that could potentially disqualify them from offering their advanced AI services, Apple Intelligence and Meta AI, in the region. The AI Pact mandates that companies devise strategies for managing AI use, identify high-risk AI systems, and educate their staff on responsible AI handling.
While Apple claims it is working with EU regulatory authorities to bring Apple Intelligence to the region, its current stance is not promising. More than 115 companies, including industry giants like Adobe, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, Samsung, and Snap, have already signed the Pact. Apple and Meta’s reluctance suggests that their AI services might be unavailable in the EU in the near future unless they decide to comply with the regulations.
The EU’s initiative to expedite AI regulation encountered hurdles as major players like Apple and Meta opted out of joining the pledge. The voluntary Pact is designed to encourage early compliance with the EU’s forthcoming AI Act, which mandates comprehensive AI management strategies for all companies and industries.
The absence of Apple Intelligence in the EU could significantly impact the appeal of the iPhone 16, as many of its major upgrades are AI-driven. This setback could dampen sales in the region, affecting Apple’s overall revenue. The big question remains: will Apple choose to sign the AI Pact and bring its intelligent features to the European market?
Your thoughts on whether Apple will eventually comply could spark an interesting conversation among tech enthusiasts and industry watchers.
