AMD’s EPYC 4124P “Zen 4” CPU has turned heads in the tech community for its impressive overclocking capabilities. Originally launched in May as part of AMD’s EPYC 4004 series aimed at entry-level servers and workstations, these chips are compatible with the AM5 socket. A standout feature is their compatibility with numerous B650 chipset motherboards, despite not being officially listed by all motherboard manufacturers.
Recently, the EPYC 4124P CPU was put to the test by noted overclocker Sergamann. Using a Gigabyte B650E AORUS Tachyon and liquid nitrogen cooling, he managed to crank the clock speed up to an astonishing 6,664.75 MHz. This is a remarkable feat for a CPU that is inherently locked, surpassing its stock boost clock of 5.1 GHz. Not only did this boost the clock speed, but it also achieved an impressive 82943 MIPS score on a 7-Zip benchmark, setting a new world record for a quad-core processor.
Interestingly, other enthusiasts have also pushed the EPYC 4124P to its limits. For example, OBSCUREPARADOX managed to reach 6,591.57 MHz on an ASRock B650M-HDV/M.2 motherboard. Similarly, overclocker SPLAVE nearly hit 6.5 GHz on the same ASRock model. These benchmarks highlight that you don’t necessarily need a high-end motherboard to achieve incredible overclocking results. Even entry-level boards like the ASRock B650M can deliver exceptional performance.
These overclocking experiments reveal an astonishing level of versatility in the EPYC 4124P CPU, which has even led some to dub it the “quad-core of the gods.” Despite initial skepticism about compatibility and performance—particularly without ECC memory support—these CPUs have proven to be robust performers in typical AM5 socket motherboards.
Some motherboard manufacturers, like ASUS, have started officially listing support for select AMD EPYC 4004 processors on their B650 chipset boards. However, even without formal endorsements, it’s clear that the EPYC 4004 series can be a viable option for building entry-level workstations.
So, if you’re intrigued by the potential of overclocking a quad-core CPU to new heights, the AMD EPYC 4124P on a B650 motherboard might just be your next exciting project. Just be ready for some adventurous tinkering and perhaps a dash of liquid nitrogen for those extreme benchmarks.
