In the fast-paced world of technology, AMD’s Ryzen AI Max Strix Halo chips have quickly become a popular choice in the realm of laptops, mini-PCs, and even handheld gaming devices. Making a splash with its latest offering, a lesser-known Chinese company, Emdoor, has introduced a promising Strix Halo-powered laptop.
Emdoor, recognized for launching a modular mini-PC earlier this year, has now unveiled the EM-959-NM16ASH-1. This laptop is highly customizable, offering configurations with Ryzen AI Max+ 395, Ryzen AI Max 390, and Ryzen AI Max 385 CPUs. Users can boost performance with up to 128 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and utilize two PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD slots for storage. It’s currently unclear if all CPU models will support the 128 GB RAM variant.
For display enthusiasts, the laptop presents a 16-inch LCD screen with an impressive resolution of 2560×1600 pixels and a refresh rate of either 165Hz or 180Hz. Power is provided by batteries available in 80 Wh and 99 Wh options. Connectivity is versatile, with choices between an Intel Wi-Fi 6 + Bluetooth 5.2 module or an AMD Wi-Fi 7 version. Webcam options include a standard 1080p version with a privacy shutter and a more advanced model with an optional IR module. The laptop also features a fingerprint reader for enhanced security.
Notably, the design includes a solitary USB 4.0 port, deviating from other models that usually support dual ports. Additional ports offer USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C with bandwidths of 5 and 10 Gbps. The device supports 2.5 Gbps Ethernet and includes a micro SD card reader. Its full keyboard comes complete with a numpad, though the directional keys may feel slightly unconventional, fitting its gaming laptop aesthetic.
Despite its robust features, the cooling mechanism of the EM-959-NM16ASH-1 remains unspecified. However, its substantial 2.4 kg weight suggests a robust build, aligning it with desktop replacement territory—a testament to the Strix Halo’s powerful capabilities. As an Original Design Manufacturer (ODM), Emdoor supplies its laptops in bulk, meaning individual purchases are not possible directly.
