AMD Shows Strong Growth in x86 CPU Market in Q2 2024

AMD has witnessed impressive gains in the x86 CPU market, particularly within the server and mobile markets during the second quarter of 2024. As anticipation for the launch of the next-generation Zen 5 architecture rose, the company prepared to introduce its Ryzen AI 300 “Strix” laptops and anticipated Ryzen 9000 Desktop chips, following the planned release of 5th Gen EPYC “Turin” CPUs later in the year.

During this period, AMD succeeded in significantly increasing its market traction in the x86 sector. The company’s overall client market share increased to 21.1%, while its revenue share climbed to 18.1%. These figures represent impressive year-over-year gains of 3.8 and 4.0 percentage points, respectively.

Breaking it down by segment, AMD’s server domain reported a notable hike, reaching 24.1% in market share with a striking revenue share of 33.7%. This marks a year-over-year increase of 5.6 percentage points in unit share and 6.6 points in revenue share. In the high-performance desktop client segment, AMD saw a mixed movement with a 4.4-point gain over the previous year, despite a slight decrease from the last quarter. Revenue share in the desktop segment also saw a year-over-year increase, offset by a minimal quarterly dip.

AMD’s mobile market share grew robustly, with unit share increasing by 3.8 percentage points and revenue by 4.5 percentage points. This growth puts AMD well within the 20% range of market share in the mobile sector, promising dynamic shifts as the market enters key sales periods such as back-to-school and the holidays.

In terms of server units and client revenue, AMD saw consistent gains both year-over-year and quarter-over-quarter, with server unit share up 5.6 and 0.5 percentage points, respectively. The client unit share echoed this positive trend, increasing both annually and quarterly.

Looking ahead, AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 “Strix” laptops are expected to go head-to-head with Intel and Qualcomm offerings, whereas the Ryzen 9000 “Zen 5” CPUs are anticipated to maintain competitive performance. Despite this, the existing Ryzen 7000 “Zen 4” CPUs are still expected to offer strong value for consumers. On the server side, the forthcoming Zen 5 EPYCs are set to make a splash in high-performance data centers and cloud services going into 2025, heralding more growth potential for AMD.

In summary, AMD’s progress in the second quarter of 2024 underscores the firm’s expanding influence in the CPU market, with strong gains in server, desktop, and mobile sectors. The company’s continued innovation and strategic launches set up an optimistic path for increasing market dominance within the technology industry.
