Samsung Foundry is grappling with setbacks as AMD reportedly shifts its 4nm orders to TSMC’s operations in the US. Despite Samsung’s broad range of products and production capabilities, it struggles to capture the industry spotlight compared to its Taiwanese competitor. Insider reports suggest AMD’s move away from Samsung might be influenced by TSMC’s appealing US facilities.
Initially, AMD was collaborating with Samsung on the SF4X process for a variety of chips, including EPYC server CPUs, Ryzen APUs, and Radeon GPUs. This partnership appeared promising as part of AMD’s dual-sourcing approach. However, the recent shift indicates waning interest in Samsung Foundry, which could be a setback for the Korean company as it seeks to strengthen its position in the chip industry.
TSMC’s Arizona facility is already rolling out 4nm processes, where AMD is likely directing its focus. AMD has already placed orders for “Venice” server CPUs using advanced 2nm processes and is also working on the Ryzen 9000 series. This enduring partnership with TSMC seems to be blossoming, offering AMD cutting-edge technological advantages.
While the current scenario isn’t favorable for Samsung Foundry, there’s still hope on the horizon with improving yield rates and interest from major players like NVIDIA in its 2nm process. This suggests a potential turnaround, keeping Samsung in the competitive loop.
