Amazon has unveiled a refreshed Fire TV Stick HD (2nd Gen), bringing a slimmer design, a faster feel, and a revamped interface aimed at making streaming quicker and easier. Positioned below the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus in the lineup, this new model keeps the familiar Fire TV Stick HD name while introducing notable upgrades for everyday TV viewing.
The biggest physical change is the new design. Amazon says the Fire TV Stick HD (2nd Gen) is 30% slimmer than the previous version, making it the slimmest Fire TV streaming device currently available. It’s also designed to run off your TV’s USB port, potentially eliminating the need to use a wall outlet for power. One important change to note: power now uses USB-C rather than micro-USB, and the USB-C port is explicitly for power only.
Performance is another focus. While the device still uses a 1.7GHz quad-core processor and includes 8GB of storage, Amazon claims the new stick is 30% faster than the earlier generation. Connectivity is modernized as well, with Wi‑Fi 6 support, Bluetooth 5.3, and Bluetooth Low Energy for compatible accessories.
For picture and audio, the Fire TV Stick HD (2nd Gen) targets Full HD viewers with 1080p output. It supports HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG for improved contrast and color on compatible TVs. Audio support includes Dolby-encoded audio via HDMI pass-through, helping enhance the home theater experience when paired with the right equipment.
The included Alexa Voice Remote remains part of the package, and the stick supports cloud gaming options such as Amazon Luna and Xbox Game Pass, giving users more ways to play without a console.
A major upgrade comes from software. The Fire TV Stick HD (2nd Gen) ships with the newer Fire TV Experience interface introduced earlier this year. Amazon describes the updated UI as cleaner, faster, and better organized, designed to reduce the time spent scrolling and searching. One of the practical benefits is improved content discovery: when you search for movies, results can surface across the streaming services you’re subscribed to, so you don’t have to bounce between apps.
Home screen customization also gets a big boost. Users can now pin up to 20 apps to the home screen, a substantial increase from the previous limit of six. And with Alexa+ onboard, the device expands beyond basic voice commands. You can use it to get recommendations on what to watch, generate an AI-created background, and control compatible smart home devices like lights and appliances.
Pricing and availability are straightforward. The Fire TV Stick HD (2nd Gen) is available for pre-order now for $34.99, with a release date set for April 29. The earlier Fire TV Stick HD is still available too, currently discounted to $19.99 from its regular $34.99 price point.
