Airbnb Introduces Pay Later Option for US Travelers

Airbnb is introducing “Reserve Now, Pay Later,” a fresh feature for U.S. users that allows reservations without an immediate payment. This change aims to simplify cancellations if plans shift unexpectedly.

This feature is available for properties with “flexible” or “moderate” cancellation policies. Flexible policies permit cancellations up to 24 hours before check-in, while moderate ones offer no-fee cancellations until five days before.

Users need to complete their payments before the free cancellation window closes. Airbnb will send payment reminders to ensure timely processing.

Airbnb is not a newcomer to flexible payment solutions. Back in 2018, it unveiled a “Pay part now, part later” program, enabling initial payments of 20% or 50% with the remainder due later. In 2023, they partnered with Klarna to offer payment in four installments over six weeks.

A survey by Airbnb with Focaldata revealed that 55% of participants favored flexible payment options for bookings, and 42% missed out on properties while coordinating payment details with other travelers.
