Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot recently addressed concerns surrounding the company’s perceived agendas following the announcement of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. This comes after months of backlash from fans who have been vocal about the choice of Yasuke, a mysterious historical figure, as the game’s protagonist. Critics argue that Ubisoft is overemphasizing Yasuke’s historical significance to push an agenda, while supporters counter that the critiques are rooted in racism.
Guillemot’s statement, covered by Gamesradar+, aimed to clarify Ubisoft’s position. He said, “Let me address some of the polarized comments around Ubisoft lately. I want to reaffirm that we are an entertainment-first company, creating games for the broadest possible audience, and our goal is not to push any specific agenda. We remain committed to creating games for fans and players that everyone can enjoy.” Though he didn’t explicitly mention Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the timing suggests it was a direct response to the controversy surrounding the game.
Initially slated for release sooner, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been postponed and is now set to launch on February 14, 2024. The game will be available on Windows PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Amazon Luna.
The decision to delay the game has only fueled the conversation, making it a hot topic among gamers. Whether or not this delay will impact the reception remains to be seen, but it’s clear that Ubisoft is standing firm in their commitment to reach the widest audience possible without pushing specific agendas. Fans are eagerly awaiting February 14 to see how the narrative and historical elements ultimately come together.
