YouTube Supercharges Podcasts with AI Picks and Smart Playback Speed

YouTube Premium adds AI podcast recommendations, Auto speed, and a new on-the-go listening mode

YouTube is expanding its podcast experience for Premium subscribers with a new set of features designed to make podcast discovery and listening easier, smarter, and more convenient. The platform is rolling out AI-powered podcast recommendations, an Auto speed playback option, and a dedicated on-the-go mode for people who listen while commuting, exercising, or multitasking.

The update shows how seriously YouTube is taking the podcast market. As video podcasts continue to grow in popularity, YouTube is positioning itself as a major destination for both video and audio-first podcast fans. The new tools are aimed at helping users find more relevant shows, listen more efficiently, and enjoy smoother playback when they are away from the screen.

One of the biggest additions is an AI recommendation feature for podcasts. YouTube already offers an “Ask Music” tool that helps Premium users create personalized radio stations and playlists. Now, the platform is bringing a similar idea to podcasts. Users will be able to ask for podcast suggestions based on genres, moods, interests, or shows they already like.

This could make podcast discovery much easier for listeners who often spend too much time scrolling through recommendations. Instead of browsing manually, users can get more personalized suggestions that match what they want to hear at that moment, whether it is a true crime series, a business discussion, a comedy show, a wellness podcast, or a news-focused episode.

YouTube is also introducing Auto speed, a new playback feature built to make listening more efficient without making conversations harder to follow. While YouTube already allows users to manually change playback speed, a fixed speed does not always work well for podcasts. Hosts and guests may speak at different paces, pause often, or shift between casual conversation and information-heavy discussion.

Auto speed is designed to adjust playback more intelligently. It can speed up slower parts of a conversation and adapt when the content becomes denser or harder to process. The goal is to help listeners move through episodes faster while still understanding the discussion clearly.

For podcast fans who listen to long-form interviews, news breakdowns, educational shows, or multi-hour conversations, this feature could be especially useful. It offers a more flexible alternative to manually switching between speeds throughout an episode.

The third major addition is a new on-the-go listening mode for YouTube Premium users. This feature focuses on people who often listen while walking, running, driving, commuting, cooking, or doing other tasks. It offers simplified controls that are easier to use when users are not actively watching the screen.

With on-the-go mode, listeners can quickly skip forward, rewind, or move to the next episode. YouTube says the feature is meant to improve the background playback experience, making podcasts easier to control during daily activities.

This is an important improvement because many podcast listeners treat episodes like audio content, even when the podcast is available in video form. By making background listening more practical, YouTube is moving closer to the experience offered by dedicated podcast and music streaming apps.

Auto speed and on-the-go mode are now available to YouTube Premium subscribers on Android. YouTube plans to bring the features to iOS in the coming months.

The timing of the update highlights YouTube’s growing podcast ambitions. The company says Premium users watched more than 800 million hours of podcasts in April 2026. YouTube Podcasts also reportedly has over 1 billion monthly active users, showing the platform’s massive reach in the podcast space.

With AI-powered discovery, smarter playback speed, and better mobile listening controls, YouTube is trying to make podcasts more personal and more convenient for Premium users. These additions could help the platform keep existing listeners engaged while attracting new podcast fans who want a flexible experience that works for both video and audio listening.
