YouTube is taking significant steps to safeguard teens globally from content that promotes unrealistic physical ideals and encourages social aggression. This initiative, which first launched in the U.S. last year, extends to teenagers worldwide as of Thursday.
Over recent years, YouTube has faced critique for its potential role in exposing teens to harmful content that may contribute to eating disorders and adverse self-image. The platform aims to combat these issues by limiting videos that make comparisons of physical features, idealize certain fitness levels, or promote specific body types.
Additionally, content featuring “social aggression,” such as non-contact fights or intimidation, will also see reduced exposure for teens. While any single video might not seem harmful, YouTube acknowledges that repeated exposure can have a cumulative negative effect on young viewers. To counter this, the platform will curtail the frequency of recommendations related to such themes.
YouTube’s recommendation system usually suggests content based on user engagement and viewing habits. Recognizing the need to protect developing minds, the company is stepping in to prevent teens from encountering these types of videos repeatedly, even if the content technically aligns with YouTube’s guidelines.
Dr. Garth Graham, YouTube’s global head of health, highlighted this concern, noting that continual exposure to idealized standards could lead teens to form negative self-perceptions.
This announcement coincides with the recent introduction of a new parental tool that allows parents to link their accounts with their teen’s YouTube account. This feature provides parents with insights into their teen’s activity on the platform, such as the number of uploads and subscriptions. This tool complements YouTube’s existing parental controls designed to supervise accounts for children under 13.
It’s worth noting that other social media platforms, including TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook, also enable parental supervision of young users. However, YouTube’s proactive measures are a significant advancement in creating a safer online environment for teens navigating today’s digital landscape.
