This week, the tech world buzzed with Xiaomi’s announcement of the XRING 01, set to launch later this month. While initial details were scarce, CEO Lei Jun later revealed that this achievement was a decade in the making, requiring significant investment and effort.
Over $4 billion was poured into development just this year, illustrating Xiaomi’s commitment to creating breakthrough technology. The XRING 01 stands as a testament to this commitment, marking the company’s ambitious journey to innovate beyond existing industry norms. By focusing on in-house chip development, Xiaomi aims to reduce reliance on giants like Qualcomm and MediaTek, offering a unique integration of hardware and software.
The project’s complexity required the expertise of a former Qualcomm senior director, along with a team of around 1,000 employees. These moves highlight Xiaomi’s dedication to establishing itself as a leader in core technology, even in the face of challenges that have defined its 15-year history.
Lei Jun emphasized the hurdles faced along the way, particularly in 2019, pointing out that the company’s resilience has shaped its success. Reports indicate the XRING 01 uses TSMC’s 4nm process and ARM’s existing CPU designs, steering clear of developing their own cores for now.
Such investments underscore Xiaomi’s long-term vision and its strategic push towards innovation on a monumental scale.
