Windows 11 Update Will Boost Security, But Some Gamers May Notice Performance Drops

Microsoft is getting ready to expand the use of Memory Integrity on more Windows 11 PCs through upcoming quality updates expected in October. The feature is built to make Windows 11 safer by blocking malicious code and untrusted drivers from running at the deepest levels of the operating system.

Memory Integrity is part of the Core Isolation security tools in Windows 11. It relies on virtualization-based security, often called VBS, to create a protected environment where Windows can verify that only trusted kernel-mode drivers and code are allowed to operate. In simple terms, it adds another layer of defense against attacks that try to take control of the system through unsafe drivers or low-level software.

According to Microsoft, the upcoming updates will enable Memory Integrity on eligible Windows 11 devices. If required, virtualization-based security may also be switched on automatically to support the feature.

While this is good news for security, it may not be ideal for every gamer. Microsoft has previously confirmed that Memory Integrity can affect gaming performance on some PCs. The level of impact depends heavily on the hardware inside the system.

Newer processors are expected to handle the feature with little to no noticeable slowdown. However, users with older CPUs may see lower frame rates in certain games, especially in titles that are already demanding on system resources.

There is an important detail for users who previously turned Memory Integrity off. Microsoft says it will not automatically re-enable the feature if the user has already disabled it manually. However, people who never changed the setting may find that Memory Integrity becomes active after installing the upcoming Windows 11 quality updates.

Users who want to check the setting can do so through the Windows Security app. Search for “Core Isolation” in Windows, open the Core Isolation settings page, and look for the Memory Integrity toggle. From there, it can be turned on or off.

Microsoft recommends keeping Memory Integrity enabled because it improves protection against malicious software, unsafe drivers, and certain types of advanced attacks. For most users, the extra security will likely be worth it.

Gamers, however, may want to test performance before and after the update. If a noticeable drop in frame rates occurs, Memory Integrity can be temporarily disabled while gaming and then turned back on afterward for better overall protection.

The change highlights the ongoing balance between stronger Windows 11 security and maximum gaming performance. For everyday users, the update should make PCs safer with minimal downside. For competitive gamers and those using older hardware, it may be worth keeping an eye on the setting once the October updates arrive.
