Windows 11 Performance Upgrades Are Coming, but 8GB RAM Laptops Still Won’t Get Copilot+ Features
Microsoft is continuing to refine Windows 11, and one of its confirmed goals is to make the operating system run better on PCs with 8GB of RAM. That is welcome news for users with budget laptops or older machines, especially as modern Windows apps and background processes can often consume a surprising amount of memory.
However, these upcoming optimizations do not mean that 8GB RAM laptops will become eligible for Copilot+ PC features. Based on leaked laptop specifications from Lenovo’s upcoming IdeaPad Slim lineup, Microsoft’s AI-focused Copilot+ requirements still appear to demand at least 16GB of system memory.
The leaked details reportedly include 14-inch and 15-inch Lenovo IdeaPad Slim models powered by AMD Ryzen AI processors. While these chips include dedicated AI hardware, that alone is not enough to unlock Copilot+ support. The specifications indicate that configurations with 8GB of RAM are marked as non-Copilot models, suggesting that memory capacity remains a key requirement.
This is important because many buyers may assume that any laptop with an AMD Ryzen AI processor automatically qualifies as a Copilot+ PC. In reality, the processor is only part of the equation. Microsoft’s Copilot+ platform also requires enough memory and other hardware specifications to support local AI features smoothly.
Another factor is upgradeability. The upcoming Lenovo IdeaPad Slim models are expected to use LPDDR5X memory, which is typically soldered directly to the motherboard. That means users who buy an 8GB version likely will not be able to upgrade it later to 16GB. While newer modular memory standards exist, they are not expected to appear in lower-cost notebook ranges anytime soon.
For everyday users, this may not be a major loss. Copilot+ features are designed around local AI processing, but many people are more likely to benefit from better overall Windows 11 performance than from advanced AI tools. If Microsoft can reduce memory usage across the operating system and built-in apps, 8GB laptops could feel much faster and more responsive.
Memory efficiency is a real issue in Windows 11. Some built-in apps can use far more RAM than expected, with the Weather app reportedly capable of consuming up to 1.6GB in certain situations. On a laptop with only 8GB of memory, that is a significant amount of available resources being used by a single app.
There are also examples of premium thin-and-light laptops using a large portion of their 8GB RAM even when no user-opened programs are running. In some cases, system processes and background services can take up most of the available memory before the user even launches a browser, productivity app, or game.
That is why Microsoft’s focus on optimizing Windows 11 for 8GB RAM systems may be more valuable than expanding Copilot+ compatibility. Many affordable laptops still ship with 8GB of memory, and better performance on these machines could improve the experience for millions of users.
Those who still want access to AI tools have other options. Cloud-based services such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini can provide powerful AI capabilities from almost any modern laptop, including devices without Copilot+ certification. The main limitation is that these services require an internet connection, while Copilot+ features are designed to run locally on supported hardware.
For buyers considering a new Windows 11 laptop, the takeaway is simple: if Copilot+ features matter to you, choose a model with at least 16GB of RAM and a supported AI processor. If your priority is web browsing, schoolwork, office tasks, streaming, and general use, an 8GB laptop may still be practical, especially if Microsoft’s promised Windows 11 performance improvements deliver meaningful results.
In short, Windows 11 is expected to become more efficient on 8GB RAM PCs, but Copilot+ will remain reserved for higher-spec machines. The good news is that better memory management could make a bigger difference to most users than AI branding alone.
