Oppo May Be Testing a Wider 16:10 Smartphone Design
Oppo could be preparing to revisit a wider smartphone format, a move that would stand out in a market dominated by tall, narrow displays. A new rumor suggests the company is exploring a bar-style phone with a 16:10 screen ratio and a display size of around 6.3 to 6.4 inches.
This would be an interesting shift for Oppo, especially considering the company’s past approach to foldable phone design. The Oppo Find N2, released in 2022, featured an 18:9 aspect ratio that made it feel noticeably wider and more compact compared with many competing foldables at the time. While other brands pushed taller and slimmer screens, Oppo showed that a broader display could offer a more tablet-like experience in a smaller package.
Over time, however, Oppo’s foldable phones moved closer to the industry standard, becoming taller and more familiar in shape. Now, the company may be looking at wider screens again, but this time for a traditional slab-style smartphone rather than a foldable device.
A 16:10 smartphone display could bring some clear benefits. Wider screens can make reading, browsing, multitasking, gaming, and watching certain types of content feel more comfortable. Text may appear less cramped, apps could have more room to breathe, and users who prefer compact tablets might appreciate the extra horizontal space.
However, the design may also come with drawbacks. A wider phone is usually harder to use with one hand, especially for people with smaller hands. Reaching across the screen could become less comfortable, and pocketability might suffer compared with today’s taller, narrower smartphones.
For now, this appears to be an early concept rather than a product headed for release. Tipster Digital Chat Station claims there are currently no signs that a 16:10 Oppo smartphone is moving toward mass production.
Still, the idea is worth watching. If Oppo does move forward with a wider 16:10 phone, it could offer a refreshing alternative in a smartphone market where many devices look and feel increasingly similar. Whether users would embrace the change depends on how well Oppo balances screen comfort, portability, and everyday usability.
