Valheim Sets Sail for Switch 2 With a 2026 Release Window

Coffee Stain Publishing and developer Iron Gate are bringing Valheim to Nintendo Switch 2, giving more players a chance to dive into the game’s brutal, low-poly Viking survival adventure. The studio confirmed the Switch 2 version is planned for release later this year, arriving alongside the previously announced PS5 port.

Valheim first launched in Early Access for Windows PC in 2021 and quickly became one of the standout survival and crafting games of its era. It later expanded to Xbox in 2023, and its upcoming console additions continue that momentum.

Revealed during the recent Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase, the Switch 2 edition is being built with features tailored to Nintendo’s new hardware. Players can expect full cross-play support between platforms, meaning you’ll be able to adventure with friends regardless of where they play. The Switch 2 version will also include touch screen menu support, enhanced feedback through HD Rumble 2, and gyroscope aiming for more precise control—especially useful during tense combat moments and hunting excursions.

For anyone new to the game, Valheim is a survival and exploration experience designed for 1 to 10 players. Set in a procedurally generated purgatory inspired by Viking mythology and culture, it challenges you to gather resources, craft gear, build shelters and strongholds, and fight increasingly dangerous foes while pushing deeper into the world’s mysterious regions. The premise is simple, but the sense of discovery and progression is what keeps players invested, whether you’re playing solo or coordinating with a full group.

Valheim’s success has been massive since its Early Access debut, earning widespread praise and maintaining a 94% “Very Positive” rating on Steam with more than 524,000 positive reviews. The game has also surpassed 12 million copies sold, underlining its staying power in the survival genre.

Content has continued to expand over time as well. Since its Early Access release, Valheim has received three major updates along with multiple smaller patches, adding new biomes, weapons, armor sets, building pieces, and more tools for exploration and creativity. By the time the new releases arrive, Valheim is set to feature eight fully developed biomes, including the eerie and mystical Mistlands, the punishing lava-scorched Ashlands, and the mysterious Deep North.

With a Switch 2 launch on the horizon, cross-play connectivity, and platform-specific features like gyro aiming and advanced rumble, Valheim’s upcoming release looks positioned to bring its signature survival crafting loop to an even wider audience later this year.
