Tesla’s well-anticipated refresh for the Model Y, labeled as the “Juniper” facelift, may arrive as early as next quarter or early summer. This updated version is expected to start production during the second quarter of this year, following modernizations to the manufacturing process at Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory during the recent Chinese New Year break.
However, American customers expecting to purchase the updated vehicle might face disappointment. According to internal communications intended for Tesla representatives, there won’t be a 2024 Model Y Juniper release in North America. Tesla’s directive to its staff was to clarify that no refresh for the Model Y will be launched within the year, reinforcing transparency to potential customers.
To counterbalance anticipation for the Juniper facelift and avoid a potential decrease in current sales, Tesla reps are prompted to highlight the existing incentives and price cuts for the Model Y. Such deals, which involve state and federal discounts, could significantly lower the Model Y price to under $30,000. Additionally, buyers could benefit from perks such as free Full Self-Driving (FSD) and lifetime Supercharging transfers, which have been reintroduced by Tesla.
Expectations for the Juniper facelift include a more dynamic and aggressive design, taking inspiration from the Model 3 Highland refresh. Despite the Model Y already featuring ambient LED lighting, it may upgrade to include the large central console display seen in the Cybertruck that centralizes vehicle interactions, along with new 3D visual software detailing the vehicle’s surroundings.
The base Model Y Juniper is anticipated to feature manganese phosphate battery technology from CATL, similar to the RWD Model 3 Highland. Enhanced connectivity with UWB Phone Key and the complete Hardware 4.0 suite found in the Cybertruck are also expected additions. The rollout in North America might be postponed due to extra crash testing protocols, potential HW4 FSD certification requirements, as well as challenges in ramping up production of the dry-coated 4680 battery cells necessary for maintaining eligibility for the federal tax credit.
While the new look and capabilities of the Model Y Juniper pose an exciting prospect, Tesla is clearly steering customers towards seizing the current promotions for the acclaimed vehicle, ensuring that there’s no stagnation in sales as enthusiasts await the facelift. Consequently, US buyers may need to hold off a little longer for the arrival of this refreshed Tesla Model Y variant.
