The music streaming platform SoundCloud has debuted its very own merchandise marketplace, known as the SoundCloud Store. This innovative move will not only feature SoundCloud-branded merchandise but will also empower artists to showcase and sell their custom-designed wares.
In its inaugural collection, the SoundCloud Store boasts exclusive designs from influential musicians such as Wiz Khalifa, Denzel Curry, wolfacejoeyy, Bk The Rula, and Armani White. In its ambition to foster artist development and support, SoundCloud has also extended this opportunity to certain artists subscribed to its Next Pro service, allowing them the chance to submit their unique designs.
Upon an artist’s submission of their ideas, SoundCloud pledges full support in crafting product mock-ups, manufacturing the items, and listing them for sale on the official SoundCloud marketplace. An added bonus is that SoundCloud will manage fan interaction and conduct promotional activities across social platforms, amplifying the reach of these artist-created items. In a bold move to show its commitment to supporting artists, the service currently allows creators to retain 100% of the profits generated from their merchandise sales, without charging any fees.
The trend of providing artists and creators with new avenues to market merchandise and generate income is gaining momentum across social platforms. Competitors like Spotify and Amazon Music already offer options for artists to sell their merchandise. Spotify provides features to artists to curate their merchandise catalogs on their profile pages, while Amazon Music has partnered with Bandsintown for merchandise services.
Furthermore, platforms like TikTok and YouTube have launched tools enabling creators to feature products in their videos and benefit from affiliate sales models, which helps them monetize their content effectively.
At the time of launch, SoundCloud’s store will cater to fans in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. SoundCloud’s commitment to artist empowerment has been evident over the past year, as evidenced by the release of several tools designed to enhance artist-to-fan engagement. These tools include advanced analytics for artists to gain insights into their audience and direct messaging capabilities to facilitate personalized fan interactions.
By embracing the intersection of music, commerce, and community, SoundCloud’s merch store initiative represents a novel approach in the industry, offering practical and engaging opportunities for artists to connect with fans and build their personal brands.
