Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) is already causing a significant stir among gaming enthusiasts, even though the game’s release is anticipated for Fall 2025. Recent revelations about the GTA 6 footage leak in 2022 have shed more light on how a phishing scam led to one of the biggest breaches in gaming history.
Details have emerged that the hacker, known as Arion, targeted an employee at Rockstar India via a phishing scam. This scam enabled Arion to access the employee’s browser data and subsequently gain entry into Rockstar’s internal Slack channel. This lapse reportedly cost Rockstar Games millions, estimated at around five million dollars. The hacker obtained sensitive files, including about 90 early gameplay videos of GTA 6 and source code information, which gave fans an early glimpse into the game’s setting and mechanics. Vice Beach, a new area reminiscent of GTA Vice City, was among the leaked content.
The aftereffects led to Arion, a 17-year-old from the UK, being apprehended and placed in juvenile detention. The leak also highlighted the significant role Rockstar India is playing in the development of GTA 6, particularly in creating the “Vice Beach” area, acknowledging the massive scale of the upcoming game. The involvement of Rockstar India, known for their contributions to other major titles like Red Dead Redemption 2, underscores the collaborative effort behind GTA 6’s development.
This incident emphasizes the vulnerabilities businesses face in remote work setups, where a simple phishing scam can lead to severe security breaches. Rockstar has since taken measures to mitigate the damage, including planning promotional activities like the release of an official trailer on December 4, 2023. However, it remains to be seen how these developments will impact the game’s release schedule.
Stay tuned for more updates on GTA 6 as we inch closer to its highly-anticipated launch.
