UMC Earnings Surge 2x as Chipmaker Highlights Intel-Partnered U.S. Production Alternative

United Microelectronics Corp (UMC) is off to a strong start in 2026, posting a sharp rebound in profitability as demand and factory activity improved from the prior quarter.

The Taiwan-based chipmaker said its first-quarter 2026 net profit reached NT$16.17 billion (about $490 million). That’s a 61% jump compared with the previous quarter and more than double what the company earned in the same period a year earlier. The results highlight a clear turnaround in momentum after a weaker stretch, driven mainly by healthier semiconductor output and better use of production capacity.

UMC attributed the performance to a recovery in wafer shipments and rising utilization rates, two key measures investors watch closely in the foundry business. When utilization climbs, it usually means more of a company’s manufacturing lines are running at productive levels, helping to spread fixed costs and support stronger margins.

The quarterly update also reinforces UMC’s position as a major contract chip manufacturer serving a broad mix of customers. As shipments improved, the company was able to convert the uptick in demand into tangible financial gains, signaling that operating conditions have become more favorable than in recent quarters.

Alongside the earnings momentum, UMC continues to point to a U.S. manufacturing pathway backed by Intel, offering an additional option as the global chip industry expands production footprints beyond Asia. While UMC’s core manufacturing base remains in Taiwan, the ability to reference a U.S.-based alternative speaks to ongoing shifts in semiconductor supply chains, where customers and governments increasingly value geographic diversification and resilient production capacity.

With profit more than doubling year over year and utilization recovering, UMC’s first-quarter numbers set an upbeat tone for 2026 and suggest the company is benefiting as wafer demand and factory loading levels stabilize and improve.
