UK Xbox Accounts Now Require Age Confirmation

In a recent move to align with the UK’s Online Safety Act, Microsoft will soon require Xbox players in the UK to verify their age to continue using social features. This change applies to accounts that show an age of 18 or older.

The Online Safety Act, which took effect on July 25, 2025, mandates companies to implement verification methods to shield minors from potentially harmful or inappropriate content. In response, various platforms have already begun adopting similar measures. For Xbox users, this means that starting today, those with UK-based accounts and indicating they are 18 or older will start receiving prompts to complete age verification.

Microsoft emphasizes that this is a “one-time process,” and users can verify their ages through various means such as using a government-issued ID, credit card verification, age estimation, or checking with mobile providers. Partnering with Yoti, a UK-based identity company, Microsoft ensures a secure verification process.

Players choosing not to verify will still be able to enjoy gameplay. However, from early 2026, accessing social features like voice or text communication and game invites will require age verification. Microsoft encourages users to complete this process now to avoid interruptions later.

Interestingly, some gamers are already discovering creative ways around this requirement, like using certain game features or turning to VPNs. The new law has prompted discussions about privacy concerns and the implications of sharing sensitive information, with various non-profit organizations voicing their concerns.

This new directive underscores the balancing act between online safety and privacy rights, as companies adapt to evolving legal landscapes.
