Ubisoft is taking drastic steps to steer through turbulent times after numerous setbacks in 2024. The well-known gaming industry giant has initiated measures involving a reduction of 185 employees from its workforce and the closure of its studio in Leamington, UK.
This past year has been particularly challenging for Ubisoft. Their much-anticipated “AAAA” title, Skull and Bones, received lukewarm responses from gamers and critics alike. The company’s venture into the free-to-play arena with XDefiant was short-lived due to underwhelming player engagement, leading to its closure after a mere six months. Even the hyped Star Wars Outlaws game couldn’t hit its anticipated sales targets.
These unforeseen challenges have inevitably led to Ubisoft’s difficult decision to downsize and reorganize its operations. The immediate consequence is the complete shutdown of their Leamington studio, known for its work on Tom Clancy’s The Division 2. Some of its employees, however, may transition to remote work contracts.
The restructuring does not end there. In Düsseldorf, known for the creation of games like Anno and The Settlers, resources will be reduced. In Stockholm, adjustments will result in decreased capacity, having last worked on Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. Ubisoft Reflections in Newcastle, once celebrated for the Driver series, will also see a decrease in personnel as it continues to back AAA projects.
The Ubisoft community has taken to Reddit to voice a mix of criticism and compassion over these developments. Many supporters express empathy towards the employees affected by these layoffs, stating how unfortunate it is since most were dedicated individuals facing challenges from upper management. Comments reflect a sentiment that blames the leadership for relying on outdated business strategies and lacking innovation. Criticism also surfaces around the game’s excessive political correctness, which some argue has alienated core audiences.
Looking ahead, industry insider Jason Schreier notes that Ubisoft’s future heavily relies on the performance of its upcoming title, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, slated for release on March 20.
As gaming enthusiasts and the wider industry watch closely, it becomes clear that the forthcoming months are crucial for Ubisoft to regain its footing and reinvigorate its brand in a rapidly evolving market.
