Earlier this year, Ubisoft launched the multiplayer shooter XDefiant, hoping to challenge the dominance of the Call of Duty series. This PvP shooter, which featured characters from various corners of the Ubisoft universe, initially attracted attention and eager players. However, despite its promising start, XDefiant quickly faced a downturn in player engagement.
The head of the XDefiant team had assured players just a month ago that the game was not facing the axe. However, recent developments have taken a different turn. Mark Rubin, a leading figure in the team, has announced the wind-down of this free-to-play title. He acknowledged the passionate work of the team and the dedicated fan base but cited insufficient player retention as a key reason for the game’s discontinuation. In the competitive arena of free-to-play first-person shooters, the game simply wasn’t meeting the necessary engagement metrics to justify continued investment.
XDefiant’s servers will remain active until June 3, 2025, allowing those who have downloaded the game to enjoy it until its ultimate shutdown. Although new downloads will cease from the Ubisoft Store, those with the title already installed can continue playing. Ubisoft plans to release content for a third season, ensuring some fresh gameplay experiences before the servers go offline. Additionally, players who purchased the Ultimate Edition of XDefiant will receive a refund. The same applies to those who bought cosmetic items from the in-game store within the last 30 days.
Unfortunately, the closure of XDefiant has broader implications for Ubisoft’s operations. The company’s San Francisco and Osaka studios will be shuttered as a result, while the Sydney team faces downsizing. This decision impacts a total of 277 employees, with some being reassigned to other studios within Ubisoft. Despite this setback, the company remains committed to finding new opportunities and projects to enthrall gamers worldwide.
