The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Is Being Ported to Nintendo 3DS by a Homebrew Developer
A new Nintendo 3DS homebrew project is turning heads in the retro gaming community, and it could give Zelda fans a completely new way to experience one of Nintendo’s most beloved adventures. Developer Game of Tobi, also known as Brendan Tobias, is working on a native Nintendo 3DS port of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
The project is still in development, but early progress already shows Link moving through a work-in-progress version of Hyrule on 3DS hardware. For fans of classic Nintendo games, handheld ports, and ambitious homebrew projects, this is an especially exciting one to watch.
Game of Tobi recently showcased the port in a video titled “For Real This Time!” The footage demonstrates basic gameplay and exploration, proving that Twilight Princess can run natively on the Nintendo 3DS in some form. While the port is not yet close to completion, the early build is already recognizable and playable in certain areas.
Tobi explained that the main challenge now is not simply getting the game to boot, but fixing bugs and improving performance. According to him, the project still needs serious optimization work, but he believes there is a lot of potential once that process begins in full.
“It is already recognisable; it can already be played in some areas,” Tobi said. “What it comes down to right now is just the work of fixing the bugs and actually optimising the game. Because so far, I haven’t done a lot of optimisation work, and there are incredible things you can accomplish if you actually do the optimisation work.”
The Nintendo 3DS port is being developed using the recently decompiled PC version of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Decompilation projects have become a major part of the game preservation and homebrew scene, allowing developers to better understand older games and rebuild them for new or unexpected hardware.
There is currently no release date for the 3DS version of Twilight Princess. Tobi has made it clear that the port will be released only when he feels it is ready. That means fans should not expect a quick launch, but the fact that the game is already running on the handheld is a promising sign.
This is not the first time Game of Tobi has taken on an ambitious Nintendo port. He previously worked on bringing Super Mario 64 to the Game Boy Advance, a far weaker system than the original Nintendo 64. That project managed to run at around 5 to 15 frames per second after major engine work and optimization, making it an impressive technical achievement even with its limitations.
Compared with the Game Boy Advance, the Nintendo 3DS gives developers much more room to work with. The handheld features 128MB of RAM and more capable processing hardware, which makes the idea of a Twilight Princess port far more realistic. Even so, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was originally designed for much stronger home console hardware, so making it run smoothly on 3DS will still require extensive work.
One of the most exciting possibilities is stereoscopic 3D support. If the project continues to advance, players could eventually explore Twilight Princess with the Nintendo 3DS’s signature glasses-free 3D effect. That would give the game a unique presentation not available on other platforms.
Tobi highlighted that possibility, saying that if the port moves further along, fans may be able to play Twilight Princess in a way that is “not possible on other platforms.”
For now, the project remains a fascinating proof of concept rather than a finished release. Still, the idea of playing The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess natively on Nintendo 3DS has already captured the attention of Zelda fans and homebrew enthusiasts alike.
If Game of Tobi can solve the performance issues and refine the experience, this could become one of the most impressive Nintendo 3DS homebrew ports yet.
