TSMC Bottleneck Pushes AWS to Commercialize Its Homegrown AI Chips

Amazon Web Services delivered one of its strongest performances in years during the third quarter of 2026, highlighting the continued surge in demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence infrastructure, and enterprise digital transformation.

AWS revenue climbed 39.3% year over year in Q3 2026, marking the cloud division’s fastest growth rate in nearly five years. It also represented the sixth consecutive quarter of accelerating growth, a clear signal that Amazon’s cloud business is regaining momentum as companies increase spending on high-performance computing and AI-driven services.

Total AWS sales reached US$46.0 billion for the quarter. At that pace, the business is now operating at an annualized revenue run rate of roughly US$184 billion, reinforcing its position as one of the largest and most influential cloud platforms in the world.

Profitability also improved sharply. AWS operating income rose 55% year over year to US$17.8 billion, showing that the division is not only expanding rapidly but also becoming more efficient. Strong margins suggest that Amazon is successfully balancing heavy infrastructure investment with rising customer demand across cloud storage, data analytics, machine learning, and generative AI workloads.

The latest results reflect a broader trend across the technology industry. Businesses are moving more workloads to the cloud as they modernize legacy systems, improve scalability, and adopt artificial intelligence tools. AWS has been a major beneficiary of this shift, especially as companies look for reliable infrastructure capable of handling increasingly complex computing tasks.

The third-quarter performance also strengthens Amazon’s overall financial outlook. AWS has long been one of the company’s most profitable divisions, and its renewed growth could play a key role in supporting future investments in AI, data centers, custom chips, and cloud-based enterprise services.

With revenue growth accelerating and operating income rising at an even faster pace, AWS appears well positioned to remain a major driver of Amazon’s business. The Q3 2026 results show that demand for cloud infrastructure is far from slowing, especially as artificial intelligence continues to reshape how companies build, store, and process data.
