The clash between Elon Musk and President Donald Trump might not be great news for Trump’s supporters, but it’s been a boon for X, previously known as Twitter. Over the last 24 hours, engagement on X has surged, propelling the app up the U.S. App Store’s rankings. As of June 5, X soared to the 23rd overall spot, a leap from its typical rank of 68 over the previous month.
Over the past six months, X had averaged a rank of 58, suggesting that the recent feud sparked a wave of interest and interaction with the app.
On Google Play in the U.S., X also climbed significantly, improving about 20 spots compared to its average over the last seven days, and 16 spots over the past month.
Estimates suggest that U.S. mobile app active users for X increased by 6% on June 5, likely fueled by the public’s curiosity about the Musk-Trump fallout. Notably, between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Eastern that day, active users spiked by 54% compared to the previous week.
Trump’s platform, Truth Social, also reaped benefits from this high-profile spat. As Trump shared his views on Musk, the platform’s active users in the U.S. jumped by over 400%, according to Sensor Tower’s data.
Despite this growth, X remains significantly larger than Truth Social, boasting 100 times more U.S. mobile app users. Across both platforms, the number of active users during those peak hours hit a 90-day high.
Continuing its upward trajectory following the Musk-Trump drama, X has now positioned itself as the 19th top free iPhone app on the U.S. App Store. Truth Social, while popular in the Social Networking category, ranks below 150 overall in the free iPhone apps chart.
