A recent digital event featuring Elon Musk and Donald Trump encountered technical problems, disrupting what was expected to be a significant online discussion. The discussion, scheduled for 5 pm PT, intended to bring together the tech mogul and the former President on the social media platform originally known as Twitter and which Musk now owns.
The event, which was heavily promoted by both Musk and Trump, was poised to signify Trump’s reemergence on the platform following his ban in January 2021. Users attempting to join the event at the appointed time were met with an error message, stating: “This Space is not available.” It was not until 5:42 pm PT that the conversation managed to go live, deviating from the planned 5 pm start time.
Earlier in the day, Trump had used the platform to engage with his followers for the first time in over two years, sharing campaign materials and directing traffic to his personal website. Despite his absence from this particular platform, Trump has not been inactive on social media; rather, he has been actively posting on his own network, Truth Social. Nevertheless, his ability to post on Twitter’s platform was restored in November 2022, once Musk assumed ownership of the company.
Musk, in discussing the technical mishap, mentioned that the social media network might have been the target of a “massive Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attack,” which often involves overwhelming a server with a surge of internet traffic, rendering it inoperative. Citing extensive testing that had previously supported 8 million simultaneous listeners, Musk connected the technical difficulties to what he sees as resistance to Trump’s words: “As this massive attack illustrates, there’s a lot of opposition to people just hearing what president Trump has to say,” he asserted as the conversation eventually got underway.
Such difficulties are not unprecedented on the social media platform. A comparable situation unfolded in May 2023, when technical issues thwarted a campaign announcement by Ron DeSantis, who was engaging in a session with Elon Musk and venture capitalist David Sacks.
This incident highlights the potential vulnerabilities of digital platforms in the face of high-demand events, particularly those with political significance. As digital engagement continues to play a pivotal role in political discourse, ensuring the reliability and security of these platforms remains essential for hosting such critical conversations.
