Turning your Android TV or tablet into a stunning photo display is simple with Kodi, allowing you to use your NAS for a personalized screensaver. Your NAS photos need to be shared, typically via an SMB or NFS share—something most NAS users likely have set up already.
Once your setup is ready, Kodi installation is straightforward. It works seamlessly across devices like Android TV, Raspberry Pi, Android tablets, and even iPads, if you’re open to sideloading.
Here’s how to get started with Kodi:
1. Open Kodi and navigate to Settings > Interface > Screensaver > Screensaver Mode.
2. Select “Add More” to browse available screensavers and choose “Picture Slideshow Screensaver.”
3. After installation, add a network location to the screensaver as you would in the Kodi library.
4. Customize settings like timeout and pick from various transition effects, such as the Ken Burns effect.
While this setup is effective, there are a couple of things to bear in mind. The Kodi screensaver cannot be set as the default in Android, so Kodi needs to be running for it to activate. Additionally, prolonged use may fill up your Android TV’s storage. For example, it took around four years before noticeable slowdowns occurred due to full storage on an 8 GB Nvidia Shield. This is something to consider if your device has limited storage.
