Transforming your Android TV or tablet into a dynamic photo screensaver can be effortlessly achieved using Kodi. If your photos are stored on a NAS, you’ll need to ensure they are shared via SMB or NFS, a step most NAS users will likely have already completed. Once shared, setting up Kodi is straightforward and works with various devices, including Android TV, Raspberry Pi, Android tablets, and even iPads if sideloading is an option.
Once Kodi is installed, follow these simple steps:
1. Navigate to Settings > Interface > Screensaver > Screensaver Mode.
2. Click “Add More” to explore available screensavers.
3. Select and install the “Picture Slideshow Screensaver.”
After installation, you can link your NAS photo library just as you would in the Kodi library. Customize settings such as timeout intervals and choose from a variety of transition effects like the Ken Burns effect to enhance your viewing experience.
However, there are a couple of considerations to keep in mind. Kodi can’t be set as the default screensaver on Android, so it must remain open for the screensaver to activate. Additionally, prolonged use of the screensaver could eventually impact your device’s storage. For instance, on an 8 GB Nvidia Shield, it took about four years before any slow down due to storage issues was noticeable. So, if your device has limited storage, keep an eye on available space.
