TikTok Shop Unveils Digital Gift Cards in a Bold Bid to Rival Amazon and eBay

TikTok Shop is making digital gifting a lot easier with the rollout of digital gift cards, giving users a simple way to help friends and family shop from the huge range of products available in the app.

The timing is no accident. The feature arrived during the holiday shopping season, when competition is at its peak and TikTok’s shopping business has the most to prove. By adding gift cards, TikTok Shop moves closer to the e-commerce experience shoppers already expect from major online marketplaces. The company has also been pushing further into higher-end shopping with a recent expansion into luxury retail, signaling bigger ambitions in the online shopping space.

Here’s how TikTok Shop digital gift cards work. Buyers can load a card with an amount ranging from $10 to $500, then personalize it with animated designs that fit the moment. There are options for birthdays, weddings, thank-you messages, and other common occasions, helping the gift feel less generic even though it’s delivered digitally.

Gift cards are sent by email, and the recipient needs a TikTok account to redeem them. Once redeemed, the balance is credited instantly to the recipient’s TikTok Balance, ready to use on purchases within TikTok Shop. Recipients can also respond with a thank-you note, or even send a gift card back.

For now, TikTok Shop gift cards are only available for purchase in the United States.

TikTok says personalization is just getting started. The company plans to expand customization features, and by early 2026, users are expected to be able to record or upload video messages to attach to their digital gift cards. TikTok has also teased an “interactive unboxing” experience designed to capture reactions in real time, though it hasn’t shared exactly how that will work yet.

This gift card launch follows a major sales milestone for TikTok Shop in the U.S. The platform reported more than $500 million in sales across the four-day Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping period, underscoring how quickly its in-app commerce is scaling.

At the same time, TikTok Shop’s momentum comes amid ongoing uncertainty about the app’s future in the United States. A potential sale of TikTok’s U.S. operations to an American investor group remains a looming issue. If a sale does not happen, TikTok could face a nationwide ban. The current deadline has been extended to January 23, 2026, leaving the long-term status of TikTok in the U.S. unresolved.
