eBay Introduces AI-Driven ‘Shop the Look’ Feature on iOS App for Fashion Shoppers

In a move to enhance the online shopping experience for fashion lovers, eBay has unveiled a novel feature within its iOS application labeled ‘shop the look.’ This AI-driven tool aims to offer personalized fashion suggestions by presenting a carousel of images and ideas tailored to the user’s previous shopping activities. The company asserts that this feature will become more refined as customers continue to shop, better adapting to their style preferences.

The ‘shop the look’ function includes interactive hotspots on fashion images that, when engaged, display similar items and style combinations. This provides users with outfit inspiration that accommodates their unique taste, encouraging them to envision how different fashion articles could bolster their existing wardrobe. Notably, the recommendations put forward will span both pre-owned and luxury categories, ensuring a wide array of choices for users.

To enable this feature, eBay has leveraged its own AI technology under eBay.ai and has worked in collaboration with its Responsible AI team underlining their commitment to ethical AI practices.

To qualify for ‘shop the look’, users are required to have viewed at least 10 fashion-related products on the eBay platform within the past six months. Once this criterion is met, the feature becomes accessible through the homepage and fashion landing page of eBay.

eBay’s strategic addition serves to modernize how its extensive inventory is exhibited to potential buyers, possibly driving increased sales. The company envisages further enhancements—expanding to more categories and incorporating additional personalized touches—over the coming year.

eBay is part of a broader trend wherein companies employ AI to streamline the fashion shopping process. Giants like Google and Amazon have already undertaken similar initiatives, with Google offering virtual try-ons and Amazon assisting customers in finding well-fitting clothes via AI. However, eBay’s ‘shop the look’ sets itself apart by focusing on providing style inspiration rather than size or fit guidance, addressing the more subjective aspect of fashion shopping.

Initially rolling out to users in the United States and the United Kingdom on iOS devices, eBay plans to broaden the feature’s availability to Android users later in the year.

Through ‘shop the look’, eBay merges technology with personal style, aiming to create a more dynamic and tailored online shopping journey. By considering user preferences and focusing on style inspirations, eBay looks to redefine the e-commerce experience for the fashionable consumer.
