ChatGPT Becomes Your Virtual Dressing Room

OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Shopping With Virtual Try-On and Product Favorites

OpenAI is giving ChatGPT a bigger role in online shopping with the global launch of two new features designed to make product discovery more visual, personal, and convenient. The latest update introduces virtual try-on for clothing and accessories, along with a Favorites feature that lets users save items they want to revisit later.

The move shows how AI shopping assistants are evolving beyond simple product searches. Instead of only answering questions or suggesting items, ChatGPT is now being positioned as a more interactive shopping companion that can help users explore styles, compare looks, and organize potential purchases inside the app.

One of the biggest additions is virtual try-on. With this feature, users can upload a selfie or a full-body photo and see how a piece of clothing or an accessory may look on them. The tool will appear as a new Try On button within ChatGPT shopping results.

Users can also upload an image of a product they find elsewhere, such as a screenshot of a jacket, dress, handbag, or pair of sunglasses, and ask ChatGPT to visualize how the item would look on them. This could make it easier for shoppers to judge fit, style, and overall appearance before making a purchase decision.

OpenAI says the new shopping tools are powered by its ChatGPT Images 2.5 model. According to the company, the model is designed to generate more realistic images with improved lighting, richer textures, faster results, and better accuracy when following editing instructions. For online shoppers, that could mean more natural-looking try-on previews and a smoother experience when experimenting with different outfits.

The second major feature is Favorites. This allows users to save products they discover while browsing through ChatGPT. Saved items will be stored in a Library, making it easier to return to products later instead of searching for them again. OpenAI says saved products will appear alongside users’ try-on images, creating a central space for shopping inspiration and planning.

These features could be useful for people who like to compare multiple products before buying. For example, a user shopping for a wedding guest outfit could save several dresses, shoes, and accessories, then use virtual try-on to see which combination looks best. Someone refreshing their wardrobe could ask ChatGPT to build a complete look around a specific style, color, event, or season.

ChatGPT can also support fashion discovery in more creative ways. Users may describe a look they want to achieve, such as “minimalist office outfit,” “casual summer vacation style,” or “evening outfit with a black blazer,” and ask the assistant to find matching pieces. They can also upload photos of outfits worn by public figures or influencers and ask ChatGPT to locate similar items available to buy.

This places ChatGPT in competition with visual discovery platforms and search tools that have already become popular for fashion inspiration. For years, shoppers have used image search, social platforms, and style boards to find outfit ideas and track down similar products. OpenAI is now trying to bring more of that experience directly into a conversational AI environment.

The success of these new ChatGPT shopping features will depend on how useful and trustworthy shoppers find them. Virtual try-on can be helpful, but users may still want to know how accurately the images reflect real-world fit, fabric, sizing, and body shape. Product recommendations also need to feel helpful rather than intrusive, especially as AI companies continue testing new ways to guide consumer purchases.

Still, the launch highlights a clear direction for AI-powered shopping. OpenAI wants ChatGPT to become more than a chatbot that answers questions. With virtual try-on, saved favorites, outfit planning, and image-based product discovery, the assistant is moving closer to becoming a personal shopping tool that can help users browse, visualize, and organize their buying decisions in one place.
