Threads Now Supports Sharing to the Open Social Web, Including the Fediverse

In recent social media developments, Threads, an app developed by Meta that competes with platforms like Twitter, is making strides into the open social web known as the fediverse. The fediverse is a collective of interconnected social media platforms such as Mastodon and PeerTube, which operate on the ActivityPub protocol, allowing for cross-platform communication.

Meta has expanded its beta program that enables sharing to the fediverse from Threads to users over 18 years old with public accounts. This beta initially launched in March in a handful of countries, including the US, Canada, and Japan, and it has now rolled out to over 100 countries globally.

This move by Meta is seen as an effort to integrate with a broader social networking ecosystem. By doing so, they hope to educate users on the workings of the fediverse, lifting the veil on the process of federating accounts and sharing across various servers in the open social web. Through the Threads app, Meta is providing educational resources to help users understand how the fediverse operates and how they can engage with it.

As part of the beta program’s features, authors of posts shared to the fediverse through Threads can now receive likes and view replies from users across the fediverse network. Although direct replying to these responses isn’t available yet, this feature is in the works.

For users participating in the beta, any posts shared from Threads will also be visible on Mastodon, and interactions such as likes and replies from the fediverse will appear on Threads. To ensure a smooth experience, Meta will initially restrict the sharing to top-level posts and self-replies, excluding more complex post types like polls and controlled replies.

To enable sharing to the fediverse from Threads, users can navigate to their Account Settings and activate the “Fediverse Sharing (Beta)” option. This feature also comes with instructions and a link to the Threads Supplemental Privacy Policy for more information.

Meta is committed to growing the fediverse in a responsible manner, focusing on a community that is safe, diverse, rich in content, and interoperable. The company plans to continue collaboration with developers and policymakers to enhance the functionalities and reach of the fediverse.

Thanks to Meta’s support and the popularity of Threads, which boasts over 150 million monthly active users, Meta’s involvement in the fediverse has made the platform one of the largest contributors to this interconnected network, which hosts more than 11 million users, with over 800,000 active on Mastodon monthly. This collaboration offers potential benefits including broader content reach, enhanced community engagement, portability of data, and more, marking an exciting development for the future of social media interoperability.
